Happy Tuesday! This week’s track is Snow’s Theme from 2010’s Final Fantasy XIII Original Soundtrack, composed by Masashi Hamauzu.

I really didn’t like this game, but the soundtrack is pretty cool and I just love the way that everything you need to know about Snow’s character is encapsulated in this one track. It’s both happy and sad, hopeful but uncertain. Confident and doubtful. The choice of instruments (basically a rock band) gives you the sense of the character’s determination, but the tune isn’t as hardcore as all that – it knows it can’t win by itself. I don’t know what it is about this tune that I love so much – there’s something I just can’t put my finger on.

As for the rest of the soundtrack, well, it is good. The other characters’ themes do the same great job of characterisation as this one – it’s just the other characters aren’t quite so deep. A lot of the location themes have strengths too – such as the Sunleth Waterscape, one of the most popular tracks and there is a super-upbeat version of the chocobo theme. However, the downside to this soundtrack is that a lot of the tracks have very similar melodies – the melody of the Sunleth Waterscape being one. I personally think the soundtrack for XIII-2 is much stronger musically, but nothing quite matches Snow’s Theme.
